Photographer Focus: Edward Steichen — Helen Menken, 1926. A celebrated dramatic star of Broadway, she is probably best known today as something of a footnote: she was Humphrey Bogart’s first wife.
In 1927, Helen and the entire cast of a lesbian-themed drama The Captive were arrested on obscenity charges. Helen’s arrest was rumored to have sparked her separation and divorce from a career-minded Bogart and Hollywood studios also shunned her. Another take by Steichen:
Trivia: The same night Helen was arrested in February, 1927, across town Mae West was also taken in by police for the “obscene” nature of her latest hit stage production Sex. The critics savaged it, authorities hated it and the public loved it.
