Quick thread:

Always a lot of debate about the greatest college football teams of all time....

‘95 Nebraska
‘01 Miami
‘19 LSU

But overlooked is one team....

‘99 Sewanee
That’s the 1899 Sewanee Tigers

(1/7)
With just 22 players total, 1899 Sewanee went 12-0, out scoring opponents 322-10.

It’s not just the record or the scoring differential but they way that they did it.

A crazy plan by their AD/Coach/Manager Luke Lea pulled it all together.

(2/7)
As no one really wanted to travel to Tennessee to play them, Lea took an offer from University of Texas to play for around $700.

But the only way he could avoid losing $ on the trip was the schedule more games on the way home from Texas.

(3/7)
The plan?

Play 5 football games in 6 days

Only 13 of the 21 Sewanne
players took the 2,500 mile train trip for this crazy schedule

11/9 Texas in Austin
11/10 Texas A&M in Houston
11/11 Tulane in New Orleans
11/12 LSU in Baton Rouge
11/13 Off Day
11/14 Ole Miss in Oxford

(4/7)
Sewanne won every single game on the road trip.

5 wins in 6 days.

They outscored their opponents 91-0.

They would go on to beat Cumberland 71-0 just 6 days later.

(5/7)
The only points all year scored on Sewanee’s team?

The Auburn Tigers who were coached by John Heisman (yes, that Heisman)

Heisman would leave the next season to coach at Clemson.

They would go on to beat North Carolina 5-0 to finish undefeated

(6/7)
So the next time someone asks you about the greatest college football teams of all time, make sure you give some love to the 1899 Sewanne Tigers.
