Shocked to see so many use the Wonder Woman discourse as an excuse to be fucking horrible to young writers or those who write for genre-focused sites. This industry is so often a nightmare of elitist gatekeeping, when it's so much better if we lift each other up.
I didn't come from a household or a background in which there were loads of broadsheet newspapers and culture mags lying around. When I was a teenager and first started really getting into movies, my first experiences of criticism were mostly online.
There were the likes of Ebert, Kermode, French etc which I obviously loved, but outlets like Den of Geek and Bloody Disgusting were just as instrumental in helping me learn how to watch movies in a different way and nurture insightful ways of thinking and writing about them.
Now, people (usually) don't emerge fully-formed with a regular review gig. People work their way up. Myself and many others have spent years toiling away as bloggers for personal sites read by almost nobody, hoping to get better at the craft through sheer repetition and practice.
Not only is there no money in it, but cinema trips are a big financial outlay. That's not to mention the time pressures. Before I went full-time freelance, I barely had a moment free on my days off because I was so busy watching movies and writing about them.
The reason I mention that is because, when you're working that hard, being quoted on a poster/trailer is exciting. Being invited to a screening is exciting. Getting added to Rotten Tomatoes is exciting. Being a fan & being excited by these things does not make you a worse critic.
I am so grateful to outlets like @flickeringmyth who gave me opportunities in those early days and opened doors. @filmstoriespod does a lot of that today, and it's brilliant. Even if the money isn't always enormous, the experience is vital.
I can't even really remember where I was going with this.
But my point is that this industry is VERY tough to access. Those who have worked to enter it have tried VERY hard. And so it's shit when people pull elitist nonsense just because the byline isn't as instantly famous.

But to end on a positive note, it means that people like @simonbrew, @clarisselou, @awarmann and many others, who help to hold the ladder in place for those on the way up, are worth their weight in gold!
