Now that Brexit is out of the way, the EU has other problems that aren't going away.

Ah, I'd forgotten about the Spanish colonies of Ceuta and Melilla in north Africa. Morocco claims both. While the Canaries were colonised centuries ago, their indigenous peoples were wiped out so they're not in dispute.

Huge fences that Trump would be proud of separate the colonies from Morocco. There's one overlooking a golf course, which is the subject of one of the most iconic images of our times โ€“ migrants atop the fence watching golfers.
The fences are controversial as the Spaniards lace them with barbed wire. And occasionally, their border guards shoot at migrants. Six years ago, 14 drowned when rubber bullets were fired at them as they tried to swim to Ceuta's Tarajal beach. https://mobile.twitter.com/lamarea_com/status/960809631890247680
As you can see, the fences are the proverbial 'ring of steel'. https://mobile.twitter.com/altamiranoMLG/status/1057212910227914753
But occasionally, migrants manage to force their way into the two colonies. https://mobile.twitter.com/HelenaMaleno/status/949706420861186050
Before the crossing, they live in atrocious conditions in Morocco (Nador camp on right). But their situation isn't much better once they are in EU territory, as these images of shanties in Melilla (left) show.
