I was just thinking about those special times in the past where I heard a new song/artist and had that "who is thissss?!??" moment. That shit doesn't happen anymore cause I'm old and bitter but here's a thread about when it used to...
I had copped organized konfusions debut album based entirely on a write up I read. No single had been dropped. It was a mystery. This was the first song on the album and I was obsessed immediately
I was already a master ace (that was his original name) fan but when he dropped this I legit had never heard anything like it. I saw it video music box after school and lost my shit
Being in NYC, there weren't a lot of dudes checking for abstract west coast shit but my boy gave me a cassette with this song on it legit changed my brain in how I viewed the possibilities of rapping styles
Special Ed was already a star when this dropped and the album wasn't even all that but, stylistically, this shit was so bugged out. I think it even aged well, whcih you can't say for many stylistic choices of that era
This is another west coast one that felt like unchartered territory at the time.
This one is pretty well known and acknowledged as a classic but I can't stress how weird and inventive this was when it first came out. The beats and rhymes just felt totally new.
