In 1967, at a meeting in N.Delhi, Borlaug who is considered as the father of GR told Indian Parliamentarians, “If I were a member of your parliament. I would leap from my seat every 15min and yell at top of my voice, ‘Fertilisers! Fertilisers! Give farmers more Fertilisers’.
Most Indian Politicians bought the idea because of heavy Pesticide/ Fertilisers corps waiting to set up plants in India. A hell hole was opened & greedy corporations jumped in, these corporations have been filling pockets of all but farmers since then.
It is ironic how likes of Abhinav Prakash write huge pieces glorifying corporations and call everyone who talks the experience with those corporations as ‘anti national’ or a ‘middle man’.

Now imagine this thought, if these Pseudo economists existed when Gandhi existed. 👇
Mahatma Gandhi didn’t know how to use Charkha when he saw it first. The only reason he symbolised it & learnt it was to boycott the cloth mills of British. Now it can be argued that British were oppressive but that again is contextual.
If people like Abhinav existed, Ajit Singh and Lala Lajpat Rai would have had only 10-15 people in their meetings because the only affected people by colony bill were the Hindu Banias and not the Jat farmers. Jat farmers were actually benefited with land tightening policies.
But again the irony of likes of Prakash and Madhusudan doesn’t die here, by their logic the Mughals were progressive in letting east india company establish factories. But no they have different contexts when it comes to different periods. Wasn’t that corporatisation enough?
Let’s come to some of the hard questions and impacts that only farmers know and I am sure likes of these lackeys won’t be able to understand.
Ten corporations control 32% of the seed market valued around $23 billion and 100% of the GM food market. These companies also control global pesticide and Fertilisers market. Just 5 corporations control grain trade in the world.
Cargill is the biggest one and it also owns Continental which was second largest. Monsanto and Cargil are monoliths in Agri market and they shape the trade policies around the globe when it comes to agriculture.

You will never see lackeys asking for accountability from corps.
Prakash probably has never read NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) that made supply of import increase in Mexico from 20% to 43%. Agreements like these are made when countries in third world pass laws keeping loopholes for corporations.
Some might argue that this hasn’t happened in india. Now for f’s sake please know that Modi alone is not the villain here, all govts are party to this.
Kerala Rubber plantations are unviable due to rubber imports. $350 million rubber economy is gone due to corporatisation.
I request you to not read articles and pieces by WB economists. In 1991 WB and IMF introduced Trade Liberalisation of agriculture. Under this the cash crop cotton that was losing its land share was pushed with new seeds. It’s cultivation share increased by 1.7 million hectares.
Now the cherry pickers will not tell you what happened next. They will argue that diversification occurred. But here is the part they hide.

Monsanto following in line it’s marketing sold seeds of cotton using images of Guru Nanak in Punjab. Yes these guys are good at it.
The new hybrid seeds vulnerable to pests required more pesticides, the monopoly of pesticide again was with Monsanto. 86% crop failed and company took no responsibility. It had earned its money. The result- 876 suicides- Known as cotton widows.
In Warrangal 86% crop failed and 400 cotton farmers committed suicide. No responsibility on anyone. That’s what Prakash likes, he even said give Railways to private players. I wonder why doesn’t he think of suggesting govt to give Parliament to Reliance. Lesser worries for Modi
I need not go into further details of damage done to indigenous fishing industry by shrimp industry in TN. For every one person employed 15 were unemployed. For those who had no or zero idea of agriculture Corporations are strong enough to push for change in land ceiling acts.
Many states like MH, TN, AP etc have undergone serious changes in horticulture land ceilings. Punjab having faced the brunt of GR understands these corporations ten times better than any city babu or a wanna be activist. Spare us the mind gems Prakash. 🙏🏻
