There’s a lot I can say about why I hate establishment media, but three incidents stand out above all the others:
2/
In 2003, my parents had to explain to my terrified 10-year-old sister that *America* was invading *Iraq*, not the other way around, and the war would not be in our home.
3/
In 2017 my dying grandfather, senile and befuddled, who spent hours watching news every day, freaked out because he thought Trump was coming for him, personally. My mom had to spend hours calming him down and even then it didn’t entirely work.
4/
This year I tried to convince a different relative that global warming is not going to leave the Earth a blasted hellscape and she did not condemn her daughter to a fate worse than death by bringing her into this world. I’m not sure how well it stuck.

These are extreme cases, but this general pattern is happening all the time and I cannot express how much these lies have made the people I love suffer.
6/
I hate “the news” because if you strip out the intellectual veneer, if you watch with the innocent eyes of a child, if you’re not sophisticated enough to know it’s mostly a fucking game, what’s left is people with good hair telling lies to make you afraid.
7/7
I hate the lies and I hate the games, I hate how it devours the nation's civic marrow for clout, but most of all I hate it because people *viscerally believe them* and *live in fear*. The suffering this causes is immense and I see it every week and it breaks my heart.
