it's hard to explain, but this was so goddamn cool in 2001. Nothing else was even close.
I mean even Halo 2 and Halo 3 struggled to achieve this kind of grand scale again. The closest is Halo 3's level "The Ark"? Or maybe Halo 2's "Delta Halo"?
Hot damn, that "Silent Cartographer" opening fight though! It feels closer to RTS combat encounter design than traditional FPS design, and I love it.
It's just a hill and some good AI squad composition, but it sings.
if you've never gone out of bounds on "Silent Cartographer", you're missing out. A friend and I spent hours warthog-jumping off the highest point here.
With FPS combat design, I talk a lot about "the dance" that good enemies and encounters create. Halo's hunters have such a wonderful dance. The dance doesn't have to be hard for it to be joyous.
"Assault on the Control Room" gets some flack for its repetitive level geo, which is fair, but the AI and combat systems hold up so well even in the most basic arenas. The bridges (there are 3) are basically long hallways, but they make great spaces.
Those in glass houses...
