It’s the job of a government to convince people that its policies reflect the will of the people. It’s the job of the opposition to channelise dissatisfied factions of society.

I can’t believe this needs to be restated. But then, India is not a liberal democracy anymore.
If you ever complain about someone or a political party - especially in opposition - politicising something when they organise a protest against the government of the day, it only means you either don’t understand what a liberal democracy is or are a fascist.
Opposition can ,and in fact should, change their positions in a representative democracy. That’s the point of being in opposition.

So if you point to an opposition party and claim them changing their position on a policy is hypocritical, you don’t understand how democracy works.
In other words, it’s absolutely irrelevant what the Congress Party or Rahul Gandhi said 10 years ago. If you bring that up, you’re either problematic or a downright fascist.

What matters now is the government’s position and people’s acceptance of it; or the lack thereof.
