This is the first time I've seen the Black Confederate myth dredged up in a major newspaper to counter @nhannahjones and the #1619Project. Unfortunately, Chilton Williamson Jr. gets a little help from Harvard's John Stauffer and @TheRoot. https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-woke-see-no-eviland-nothing-but-evil-11608925768?reflink=desktopwebshare_twitter
I've called out @TheRoot many times over the years. Being able to reference a Harvard scholar gives the Black Confederate myth a legitimacy that it wouldn't enjoy without it. Here is my critique of the Stauffer piece, which you can also read in my book. http://cwmemory.com/2015/01/20/john-stauffer-goes-looking-for-black-confederates-and-comes-up-empty-again/
It's encouraging to see my academic historian friends calling out @WSJopinion for publishing a piece that references the Black Confederate myth. Only wish the same people would call out the author of the @TheRoot article referenced in support. Disclaimer should be added to it.
