I used to use Rotten Tomatoes to pick out movies to watch. I usually found myself agreeing with the critics over the audience, and anything >90% was a safe bet as something that would be highly enjoyable.
2/

Sometime around 2015 they became unreliable. Critics scores went up as a movie's budget up, independent of how good the movie actually was.

If you need proof, Star Wars 8 received a 90%. The only Star Wars movie in their "Top 50 Movies of All Time".

I don't know whether this is the result of big studios gaming the algorithm or outright paying Rotten Tomatoes, but the end result is the same. Big studios are cashing in on Rotten Tomatoes reputation and using it to lie to consumers.

This is part of a larger pattern of corporate brand scamming. A brand builds a good reputation then leverages it to sell higher margin goods.

You see it in shoes, you see it in SSDs, even grocery stores (looking at you, Whole Foods).
5/

Brand scamming works because people cling to brands even after the quality begins to slip. Once trust has been established it tends to linger, even as abuse begins.

In the modern era, this issue is stronger because of the ability to suppress criticism.

The freedom of information in the early age of the Internet was a massive accelerant for mankind. But as the Internet has evolved, the control of information has been captured by corporations that have realized how useful it is for manifesting profit.
7/

The entity that controls the flow of information decides which movies succeed in the box office. They decide which smartphones will be preferred by teens. They decide which cars will be bought by commuters. They decide which colleges students will pay $200,000 to attend.

The fight to own your data goes so much further than making sure you can listen to music without a subscription or send photos to Grandma without requiring her to use Facebook.

Every decision you make throughout your entire life is at stake. And corporations know it.
9/

Freedom of information is something we can fight for. The bad guys have trillions of dollars to throw into the fight and it doesn't matter.

A world built in the name of freedom has so much more power than anything constrained by an agenda of control and manipulation.

It's been my pleasure to be a part of a community dedicated to reviving Internet freedom. We call ourselves Terminators, and we're building a future called Skynet.

Because in a timeline where Donald Trump can be President, Skynet can save humanity.
