Christmas for consumers is over. Christmas for Christians has just begun. For us this one day (this year more than ever) resets the calendar; this birth begins the rebirth of broken creation; this historical nativity changes everything for everyone forever.
And so, on this #FeastofStephen remembering that first Christian martyr, we take the flickering flame from Bethlehem and start lighting fires. We arise in the words of Bruce Cockburn to ‘kick at the darkness til it bleeds daylight’.
In the dark shadows of this pandemic and the stale hangover of the morning after, we open wide the windows and breathe: “Everything is beginning. Everything is new. Anything just became possible.”
Maybe it’s time to renew dreams, proclaim again good news to the poor because another king has come. The days of this current regime & its long dark winter of death are surely numbered. The dawn bleeds north. Seasons change. The summer Son is born in our midst
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” ~ Isaiah 43:18-19
