From most of the reviews I'm reading WW84 is a massive casualty of lacking the theater experience in that viewers have instead been left to contemplate the logic and quality of these movies and realizing there is none immediately, instead of hours after leaving the theater
Like imagine if you watched Rise of Skywalker in a setting where you could literally stop at every scene, open your laptop or take out your phone, and immediately address how dumb the thing that just happened was. This is going to kill the entire studio blockbuster model
Attack of the clones might quite possibly be one of the worst movies ever made, but I watched it in the theater twice because it was one of the most enjoyable theater experiences in my life. Movie theaters better figure out how to market that experience as irreplaceable
In the meantime, I may have to retract my earlier prediction that release day streaming would be a death knell for theaters, because it was based on the assumption that the studios would put out, you know, good movies. Apparently they still don’t think they need to.
