I'd be interested in hearing what you thought of SOUL.

I think it's good.
Pixar-good.
And (crazy as it sounds) I think sometimes that can be a detriment.

Wait!
What?!
Why are you talking crazy-talk?!
How can being "Pixar-good" be a detriment?!
(Meet me in the next tweets.)

Sometimes it sucks watching movies w/ a friend who's a writer. Cause chances are, they've studied enough scripts (& books ON writing) that they can break down a movie you're seeing WHILE you're watching it, & successfully predict what the next twist/turn/development will be.

2/
There's a book called SAVE THE CAT that lays out a lot of rules/pacing most major studio releases follow.
If you ever want to enjoy a movie again, you probably should avoid reading it. If you want to be a writer, you should check it out (even if you don't want to follow it).

3/
Why? Cause it helps to know how a LOT of people are making the sausage. And it helps to know what formulas to avoid & confound. And/or what beats will feel like they're missing if you don't hit them. Just know, once you've read it, it'll be in your head forever. Fair warning.

Here's how this applies to PIXAR movies...

There are 22 rules that PIXAR movies follow.
This isn't a secret.
It's the engine under Pixar's hood, they've broken it down, and shared the blueprints w/ all of us of their own volition.
Like SAVE THE CAT, writers SHOULD study it.

5/
If you know these 22 rules by heart, for a writer watching any PIXAR film can become an exercise of waiting for specific dominos to fall and intuiting where/how the next ones will topple.
On some level it's no different than a sonnet, limerick, haiku, Mad-Lib, or puzzle box.

When I watch SOUL, I know it's good & admire its construction & craftsmanship. But I feel I wasn't surprised by any one specific beat or turn.

Conversely, there were elements in recent Pixars (COCO, TOY STORY 4, & ONWARDS) that sucked me in & and made me stop analyzing them.

7/
So, honestly, it's helpful to ME if you could chime in and say how much YOU connected with the characters of Joe and 22. How invested were you in the story? Did it have a strong emotional effect on you?
