Many things could affect your judgment and evaluation of films, these are some things I’ve learned to overcome along my journey with cinema, to appreciate & evaluate films more wisely.
PERSONAL BIASES

One of the most difficult prejudices to overcome is that which leads us to dismiss certain categories of film.

Although it’s natural to prefer some types of films to others, all of us can appreciate or enjoy aspects of any film.
A person who dislikes gangster films would stay away from Martin Scorsese’s ‘ Goodfellas’ for example or a person who dislikes fantasy films might ignore ‘The Lord Of The Rings’ trilogy.
Some might stay away from black & white films, always preferring color; others might shun foreign language films because they dislike reading subtitles.
Also many filmgoers are narrow in their perspective, arguing that films should be pure entertainment or artistic statements about the human condition.
Closely related are those who set up their own criteria for what makes a good film & reject movies that operate under different rules.

Those for example might reject Nolan’s ‘Memento’ or dismiss Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ for being slow moving.
All would lose a memorable film experience.
INDIVIDUAL ELEMENTS

This is caused by not watching the film as a whole. This means over responding to individual el elements rather than to the film as a whole.
This is offered by viewers who are infected with a near-fatal case of actor worship or antipathy.

For example hating all the DiCaprio films or loving every single Meryl Streep picture.
Another case is the over reaction to certain film elements. These elements are always sex & violence.

A perceptive filmgoer doesn’t condemn the film’s use of nudity or violence per se, without considering the film as a whole.
EXPECTATIONS

Another subjective element that influences a film’s evaluation is expecting too much or too little from a film.

When you expect too much from a film it can hardly mesure-up.
In conclusion we must avoid these misconceptions & instead try to be open to the film’s goals and meanings.
Next time you watch a movie try to ask yourself some of these simple questions & clear your mind of any misconceptions or biases.
