In 1st World Western Countries (1990 - 2020), most people most of the time are peaceful. Violent people are incredibly rare.
They are not peaceful because they are virtuous; they are peaceful because the incentives are set up to reward peaceful behavior, and to punish violent behavior.
Most people in Western Countries have *nothing to gain* by engaging in violence, and they have *a lot to lose* by engaging in violence.
How so?
If they engage in violence, they gain little or nothing (in most cases). However, engaging in violence comes with immense risk for them; they could be thrown in prison, or at minimum have their reputation destroyed and thereby lose the ability to make money.

Don't trust them.
Don't think "The reason nobody has ever initiated violence against me is because they are all good people.", because that is not reality.

The reason they never initiate violence against you, is because they have nothing to gain by doing so, and a lot to lose by doing so.
Beyond "Don't Trust Them", there is an additional lesson for maintaining civilization:
To make violence rare...you need to set up incentives that reward peaceful behavior and punish violent behavior.
Virtue cannot be trusted. Incentives can be trusted.
