Christmas wave
The scene by the Montrose Beach pier
Some birds I saw on Christmas
A few notes about birds: There are a bunch of red-breasted mergansers hanging out in Montrose Harbor this week …
I think I've seen this exact same duck a number of times … a domestic mallard hanging out with the other mallards. "If your weird duck is found at a park, walking around on the grass or coming near people, it is probably a domestic duck." https://www.birds.cornell.edu/crows/domducks.htm
Of course, there were lots of Canada geese.
Several black-capped chickadees and northern cardinals were congregating in the same spot, with a dark-eyed junco in their midst. They didn't flee right away at the presence of a human, like usual.
What is this? @inaturalist suggests it may be some sort of eider or scoter or an American black duck.
