Non-political thread:
For those who are finding themselves in a care taker roll for a loved one...
1st, take a deep breath & asses your unique situation. There will be decisions to make that will fall on your shoulders.
Other family members will, hopefully, want to help. Ask them. Some may only be able to do so financially or some may only have time to give - sort out who can do what...
Now, here you might get into some deep weeds...help with conditions placed on you & your loved one is not help, but "control"...some people operate like that...just recognize & adjust accordingly. Know who you can reach out for advice w/o judgement or control.
These people are your "trusted" advisors, these people understand that you do not need an additional "parent".
Next, assess your financial situation without emotion...this is key. There will be areas where you might have to reach out to govt agencies...there is no shame in this...you've paid into these nets with your taxes. Set aside time to thoroughly research.
As you go thru the above, keep in mind that understanding the medical aspect is paramount. Ask questions, get specific explanations for anything you don't understand & press for all options. The more data you have, the better decisions you can make.
Above all, as a caretaker, take time for yourself. You can't help your loved one if you are shredded by stress, physical fatigue or emotional unrest.
This final thought will be hopefully unneeded but can't be understated:
Remove toxic people out of your & your loved one's circle. Toxic people do more harm than good on many levels. From personal experience, no amount of help from such a person is help at all.
In fact, such help can be detrimental to quality of life & outcomes to a loved one's prognosis. Be on guard...
I'm not in position unfortunately to be like @pulte and others, yet I know there are those facing similar situations...my hope is that what I've learned & conveyed in this overview thread, can be helpful. This is my gift. God bless those of you facing life changes.
There is light into your path.
