The #BeeGeesHBO documentary notes an aspect of the late 70s anti-disco craze that escaped me when I was a kid: its deeply racist and homophobic vein. (1/5)
In July 1979, Comiskey Park held an anti-disco rally between a White Sox / Tigers double-header. People could attend cheap if they brought a disco album to burn. As the documentary notes, it was mostly white fans bringing non-disco records by Black artists. (2/5)
Then organizers blew up the records. What followed was a white riot. The Sox had to forfeit Game 2 since the crowd had damaged the stadium too much. (3/5)
Also, the 1979 novelty hit "Disco Sucks" was a country song, sung by Chuck Wagon & the Wheels. They would later perform such songs as "One Less Jogger on the Road" and "Let's Use the Arabs to Test the Neutron Bomb." (4/5)
Anyway, this isn't to say that disco was a great art form, but it was giving voice to gay and Black artists and fans when not a lot of other genres were, and its opponents were sometimes motivated by more than a sense of musical taste. (5/5)
