My favourite rappers/rap groups OAT, brief history and my overall opinion on them. [A thread] 👇
((I'll keep adding more over time because these take long to make) likes and rt's appreciated🙏)
Nasir Jones (Nas) had his breakthrough after his live at the barbeque freestyle in 1991, 3 years later he released his first full-length studio album 'Illmatic' which is regarded as one of the best hiphop albums of all time. Great story telling, clever word play, multiple (1/2)
Quoteables ("I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death") and backed up with good production. My Favourite album of Nas is 'Illmatic' with 'It was written' as a close second (2/2)
MF DOOM, As Zev Love X he formed the group KMD in 1988 with his younger brother DJ Subroc and another MC called Rodan. In 1993, just before the release of the second KMD album, Black Bastards,
Subroc was struck by a car and killed. His debut album, 'Operation: Doomsday', (1/3)
Where he strings bars upon bars together, to the point where every word basically rhymes somehow. Madvillainy is, in my opinion, his best album. Madlib produces incredible beats, that just fit perfectly with the vibe of the album and MF DOOM rides them perfectly (2/3)
My favourite album is Madvilliany, with Vaudeville villain and MM FOOD... as close seconds. (3/3)
Kendrick Lamar, In 2003 Kendrick released his first mixtape, Youngest Head ***** In Charge, under the name K. Dot. The mixtape got enough attention to get a record deal with Top Dawg Entertainment, a Los Angeles record company. He released a mixtape called Training Day (1/3)
Two years later. After receiving a co-sign from Lil Wayne, he released a third mixtape in 2009 called C4, themed around Tha Carter III LP. I really started listening to him when he released TPAB, before that I only knew one song on GKMC because of Vine. (2/3)
Kendrick has a very unique voice and shows a lot of raw emotion in his music, 'the blacker the berry' is a great example of that. Having Dr.Dre on your side as a producer is also really good because the production is amazing. (3/3)
Wu-Tang clan, This Eastcoast formation is part of the golden era hip-hop and consists of nine members: Method Man, Blaze, RZA, GZA, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, U-God , Masta Killa, Ghostface and ODB (who passed away in 2004). They released their debut album, (1/4)
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 chambers) in 1993. Their debut album is in my opinion their best album. RZA's production, with limited resources, was still amazing(for example, on 'Bring da ruckus' they had to slam a metal pot for the instrumental). (2/4)
I love their references to chinese fighting movies and chinese fighting culture in almost every single song they make. My favourite members of the group are GZA, Ghostface killa and Raekwon. With each of them having amazing solo albums like GZA - Liquid Swords, (3/4)
Ghostface Killa - Supreme Clientele and Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. (4/4)
A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip and Phife had grown up together in Queens and met Muhammad in high school. The group's name was coined in 1988 by The Jungle Brothers, a rap group whose members had attended the same school. Not long after that, the group started performing live, (1/3)
also recording with a local record label. The group became part of the Native Tongues family, a hip-hop artist collection known for the socially conscious and positive messages they put into their music. Their songs have this Jazzy vibe, its kind of alternative gangsta rap (2/3)
The Low end theory and Midnight marauders are both one of my favourite albums OAT, Clever wordplay, slick flows and good production with really funky beats make for great songs, if you just want to relax and vibe, i strongly recommend ATCQ. (3/3)
