Thanks to social media, we were able to identify who the man in this photo was and the full story behind it. (1 of 6)
This is an image of the late Manjit Singh "Kaadian" of BKU Punjab, son of Partap Singh Grewal, one of the founding members of BKU India. Manjit Singh's son is Harmeet Singh Kadian who is one of the president of the farmer union that is protesting in Delhi right now (2 of 6)
I found this image of the late Manjit Singh in the archives of the campaigns of anti-racism and fascism, and we were able to identify him almost immediately thanks to the following of this page. (3 of 6)
The photo was taken by Daniele Lamarche where It shows Manjit Singh Kaadian at a protest in 1999 against the WTO, IMF & World Bank re. policies & structural adjustment programmes on the "third world" that are designed to open their economies to international competition (4 of 6)
which of course would largely benefit corporations at the cost of the working class and poor. In November 1999, there were negotiations held in Seattle & the focus the protesters had was on article 27.3(b) Of the trade related intellectual property rules (or TRIPs) (5 of 6)
which discuss patenting living material and was up for review that year. These trade rules, although obscure, would have deep implications for third world farming communities. (The poorest third of the world). (6 of 6)
