The story is set in a fictional world bearing striking resemblence to the real setting that we know of.
The long lasting war between Empire of Giad and Republic of San Magnalia has reached the stalemate point, until the enemy started using Drones that were far to powerful.

Republic was forced to make a decision that deemed the ethnic minorities of the country pig in human form and sent them to camps, basically wishing them death.
The authorities could not have made this choice but they decided to go anyway cuz it was conveniant.

With this the Colorata were deemed Eighty Six and forced to pilot the "Unnamed Drones" that Republic developed and have been fighting the Legion forces ever since then(the Empire has fallen due to the overwhelming of monsters they themselves had created)
Now this might seem familliar to many and it wouldn't be an exxageration if we say that all of those was inspired by real world events.
How these systems are portraying honestly require little to no comment because what the authorities have done was essentially racism.

There is an ongoing propaganda in the Republic that revolves around claims of yet another wonderful win on the frontilines by the "Unnamed Drones", however these are all lies that citizens are being fed to.
They also have a twisted and wrong view of Colorata painted by Republic.

Amidst all of this we find our dear young and pure maiden who is as idealistic as she can, seeing all the problems that the system has caused to the opressed.
Showing sympathy to Colorata is deemed pathetic cuz these ppl do not exist.

Lena, our protagonist is a Handler of Eighty Sixers, a unit of Colorata that were fighting against the forces of Legion.
Her job is to communicate with them and essentially keep an eye on them aswell as give them orders.

She starts seeing the problem of the way citizens and authorities treats Eighty Sixers after her "meeting" with one particular and troublesome Squadron called "Spearhead" whose captain is the legendary and terrifiyng "Shinigami" Shinnei Nouzen.
The structure of the book is build in a way that we have chapters dedicated to the troubles in Republic and the ones focusing on the frontlines and horrible, war life of Eighty Sixers from Speahead.
What is interesting is the motive of seperation-
What is interesting is the motive of seperation-
Not only are Lena and Shin seperated from themselves in a physical way(they only communicate via a special neuronic device) but also psychical because they cannot understand each other no matter how much compassion one would show.
It is constantly repeated through the story that the Eighty Sixers were deceived by the authorities, promised good life for their families for working for the contry but it was all a lie.
Their name as erased, all documents too, no graves were put after their death on battlefield

The Eighty Sixers situation is especially tragical conidering the situation they were put in.
They were blamed for something they have not done, being spies of opposite country and betraying the trust and most of them were teenagers who were stripped of human rights, normal life.

The 86 is a story that is a critic of human greed and mistakes that everyone can make.
The racism nature is a terrifiyng thing and just like in WW II it can lead to disasterous effects.
The opressed one can end up with PTSD, being unable to return to life.

This is a warning of sort to the humans that are capable of doing such things, they are not exxagerated, everyone would be able to act that way if situation called for that.
We should treat others equally, despite how one looks, acts and where is from.
It is also tale of hope.
