hello, it’s a little late but i wanna talk about christmas and the strilondes, as a jew (rts are appreciated !)
the strilondes are canonically jewish. rose and kanaya had a jewish wedding, and dave mentions jewish traditions in an early pesterlog with tavros. they were always intended to be jewish, and it’s undeniably a core part of their identities
for some reason a lot of people don’t know this (or worse, decide to ignore it entirely). i thought it was far more well known than it apparently is, which is a big shame. that doesn’t excuse erasing their jewish identities though
western society, especially america, is very centered around christians. non christian holidays are at best recognized, yet ignored (i.e. “happy holidays” on christmas day) and at worst erased entirely
this is a really big issue in general, but it flares up a lot when “ambiguously” jewish characters are popularized. they aren’t directly shown participating in jewish traditions in comic (because they’re a little busy playing sburb) so people see it as fair game to +
project any headcanons they want onto them. this is erasure, intentional or not. jews do not have the same holiday practices as christians. making it so jewish characters do is indirectly contributing to erasure OF jewish traditions. traditions that are already being lost
so please, don’t draw the strilondes celebrating christmas. and if you’re going to draw them celebrating hannukah, do some research. i might tear my hair out if i see another hannukah sweater
(ps: if you wanna dm me, i’m always happy to talk about my traditions! even if we’re not mutuals or anything ^^)
