I’m going to say this with as much love & respect as possible for the four great men cited: I don’t care. What they think is totally fine & it’s their opinion. I adore these guys. But they don’t dictate the rules for my #StarWars analyses or ANYONE’S analyses. https://twitter.com/thefirstokiro/status/1342285032023609344
I don’t get this obsession some SW fans have with saying “WELL THIS ACTOR DIDN’T LIKE IT!” Okay...? If it’s a serious matter, like institutionalized racism, then we MUST listen. Absolutely. But character arc decisions of *this* sort? Why do we try to use their takes as science?
Hamill & Abrams have gone back & forth. Mark has said he came around, he thinks it’s great, & he regrets airing his grievances. JJ literally said he wishes he could have written the damn thing. The most damning thing he said was that it’s a “meta movie.” IF you think that’s bad.
Boyega has spoken on his own stuff, his LIVED EXPERIENCE as a performer which is bigger than TLJ’s choices. Frankly, it’s just weird to me to take the very real world issues he’s spoken on and use them to underline disappointment with Luke Skywalker. That’s just murky and...odd.
And Witwer is a performer who loves SW, but he’s not the final say on any of it. Not his story, and he’s smart enough to know that despite having his feelings as a fan. He helps make SW in a beautiful way but his take on Johnson’s level of “homework” is supposed to refute people?
The #StarWars loving community as a whole needs to stop with the “I love this creator/performer therefore I can win an argument with their views.” They’re people. Human beings. And they can loathe what we adore or love what we hate. Simple as that.
Some people would do well to look into other franchises where people just got straight up sick of roles. See: Daniel Craig’s “slit my wrists” Bond comments, Stephen Dillane in GOT, etc. There’s plenty of examples.
Ultimately, it becomes a question of whether or not you want to engage with opinions, or if it’s really a desire to *share opinions* with people that you admire. There’s a huge difference.
