This is a non-VR thread about my experience of celebrating Christmas remotely. This happened as I'm currently home sick and my COVID-19 test has not returned any results yet, so video link it was. I'll elaborate a bit on my impression of what this felt like in this thread. 📷
My parents had been nice enough to drop off food I could prepare on my own before today, not getting close to me but leaving the bags behind, so I ended up with a very similar plate to what everyone else had on the other side of the screen. Very nice. 👍
I think just eating at the same time makes for a shared experience, but I'm also confident having the same dish creates an even stronger connection. I also noticed the disconnect when the chocolate box was brought out on the other side, and for me it was missing. A big void. 🍫
It also comes down to the other side of the screen paying attention to the remote attendee. In the corporate world (a previous job) I've experienced our remote party of few being mostly ignored by the large group we called. With family this was thankfully a non-issue. ♥
All in all I feel like this experience has opened my eyes to how much can be done remotely, and how to make it a stronger, better experience. I'm incredibly grateful to my parents who helped set this up, I'm kind of tearing up just writing about it, 2020 is such a weird year. 😔
