C's grandparents downsized to an apartment a couple years ago so we've started only buying them consumable gifts so they don't have to worry about storage. Often restaurant gift cards, sometimes we order them a meal, sometimes we send flowers.
This year my MIL mentioned that her dad talked about a white fruitcake that his mom used to make, but she had never been able to find the recipe and so as far as she knew nobody had the cake since his mom died several decades ago.
"Aha!" I thought. Obvious Christmas present! But how do I find a decades lost family recipe?
The internet, duh. I found a recipe on a blog that sounded right and was attributed to Eudora Welty. Friends, my in-laws have been in Mississippi for generations. This had to be the recipe.
But the recipe had lies, so I made two very bad fruitcakes that were not fit to send to people. I figured out the problems, then made two much better cakes - one for my husband's grandfather and one for his only sister.
As y'all may have noticed, sending things is tough right now. So I went to UPS on Saturday and shipped two boxes and hoped they'd arrive before Christmas.
Yesterday my husband got a text from his cousin, with a picture of my husband's great aunt opening the fruit cake and accusing me of making her cry. Today his grandfather called me and asked where I got his mother's fruitcake recipe. I did it!
This is a longer thread than this little victory deserves but I'm pretty proud of myself and thought y'all might enjoy my wholesome Christmas win
C's great aunt just called me and I'm not crying, you're crying
Lest y'all think I'm some kind of magician and my kitchen was immune to 2020 being the way it was, let it be known that I burnt the base on the peppermint bark this afternoon 🤦
