My name is Mikey James. I am 24 years old, and I’m from Offaly.

Growing up in Ireland mixed-race means that your experience differs greatly between you and other mixed-race people. My mam is white Irish and my dad is Trinidadian/Irish...
My grandad was born and raised in Palo Seco, Trinidad then moved to London where he met my Grandmother who’s from Waterford!

My experience varies from being called a nigger once playing GAA to being called a paki on an almost weekly basis when I was playing football in Dublin.
..This is a mild experience compared to that of my brother, my father and my black and mixed-race friends. It’s not my place to talk about their experiences, I can only be thankful that mine wasn’t as bad...
Racism in Ireland is alive and well. It’s a passive, dismissive and arrogant kind of racism. It’s using your black friend as an excuse to get away with telling black jokes. It’s using words like paki or chink and, having the arrogance to think you can get away with it...
...Racism is racism, just because it’s not aimed at a black person doesn’t mean it is acceptable.

Today, I’ve just finished my LL.B (Bachelor of Laws) from NUI Galway and I’m studying for my FE-1 exams now (FE-1’s are the entrance exams to the Law Society of Ireland)...
...In 10 years time I hope to have a few years as a practising solicitor in Ireland under my belt. I’d love for my legal education and experience to provide a foundation from which I can promote equality in Ireland. I’ve always had a keen interest in Human Rights...
...For the country as a whole I would like black history to be something that everyone learns about and celebrates as we are becoming a more diverse country.
