a lot of 1Ls have reached out to me to discuss the ever important 1st summer job, since it’s application season. & while i hope a summer associate position is in the cards for all of y’all, here’s a thread of a few lesser known (paid!) options:
1. research assistant.
i researched for some professors from home, wrote memos, & met up to discuss once a week. paid $16/hr up to 40hrs/ week. extra perks: professors to write letters of recs, writing samples, & acknowledgement/contribution credit in published articles(!)

2. law firms!
don’t get so caught up on agencies & biglaw that you ignore small/medium firms! they usually don’t pay less than $18/hr & will allow you to work through the school year even after summer. more writing samples, more letters of rec, & they might hire you after grad.

Association of Corporate Counsel Diversity Summer Internship. comes with placement at a firm, a very healthy stipend, and interview/resume/ writing workshops. @ToyaRochelle could tell you all about it!
4. whatever you want, just make sure it gets paid!
even though most public interest summer jobs aren’t paid, there are public interest organizations that will give you grants/stipends to work for them. check with your school first but here’s some: https://www.americanbar.org/groups/center-pro-bono/resources/directory_of_law_school_public_interest_pro_bono_programs/definitions/pi_summer_fellowships/

to follow up, you can use those grants for any unpaid public interest internship including judicial internships which can lead to 1. letters of recs from judges (!) and potentially a judicial clerkship down the line.
but mostly, it’s not that serious. your first legal job is not a 360 deal. you aren’t signing up to practice whatever you do that summer. so relax & don’t let those people stress you lol.
wait forgot one lol ACLU has a summer internship program that’s unpaid but allows you to apply for financial aid. like?!
