Lots of thoughtful takes re the UK’s future relationship with the EU (closer, further etc). Rely on none of them - I say this with great respect. The UK has endured two seismic events (Brexit and Covid). Remember the financial crisis? Expect nothing to be the same in 10 years.
Various Pandora’s boxes have been opened. They will not be closed quickly if at all. Volatility. Expect lots of volatility.
It’s entirely possible that we are in the middle (not the end) of the UK’s post imperial relationship not just with the EU but with itself - and not just its nations (although that is important enough) but the way in which it is governed.
The story of the last four years is not just one of division (after all, Brexit is an act of division) but also of abject state failure (versus both objectives and expectations).
Look at the polling. The situation in Scotland is not sustainable. It is not sustainable to have clear majorities below the age of 49 supporting the non ruling party and, indeed, a closer relationship with the EU.
Change is the watchword. I will be very surprised if the UK looks the same as today in ten years time. /ends
(PS I find it a little strange that people are seeing today’s events as a ‘steady as she goes’ course given the force 10 gale into which the country is sailing with little confidence in the state’s ability to effect a better outcome)
