I recently put a link on my website to my ABLE account for gift contributions if anyone valued my labor or learned something from it. I've gotten questions as to why I want that vs Kofi, Venmo, CashApp, etc. As a disabled creator there are good reasons:
Gifts of cash to any of the above services? Impacts my Medicaid coverage and is considered as income. Meaning your kind gift could increase my spend down (deductible) or reduce my other benefits effectively negating the effect you were hoping to have!
Gifts to my Able account are NOT counted and are protected from Medicaid up to $100K. I will not be penalized and my benefits will not be impacted, and your desire will be realized as a net gain in my quality of life instead of a well intended gift that results in a loss.
In fact, your gift goes SO MUCH FARTHER, than simply not costing me benefits, it can go on to produce income as it's an investment account. Your $5 or $10 can continue on and turn into more and more via compounding interest.
I can pull from an ABLE account at any time with NO PENALTY for withdrawal. Any expense that is disability or quality of life related is allowed. (I'm not over here buying a benz, guys, LOL) The earnings on the fund are not taxable either!
Thank you so much to those of you who have contributed in the present, to protect my future. I'm so grateful. I received my last unemployment check today, and the future is real uncertain right now.
