Institutions confer status + identity through the controlled issuance of aesthetic markers: your military uniform, your doctor’s coat, your employee badge.

In an emergent network, there is no central authority, so what aesthetic markers emerge?
Humans are still tribal, we still need a way to fit in and stand out. We need to quickly communicate our place within the tribe and among tribes.

In an emergent network, participation is voluntary and not centrally gated, traditional aesthetic markers don’t represent a barrier to entry. Anyone can counterfeit.
What does? A self-directed marker that exemplifies attention + effort towards a particular value of the network.

For emergent networks that comprise men, the first value is Strength.
Physicality and being strong is the first pillar of ALL the men’s affinity networks.
You can’t tell which Men’s network but you can sort him into one.
He’s choosing not to be a beta.

There are emergent women’s affinity networks that bifurcate along baby wearing lines.
