Bad journalism has really ugly consequences. We are still living with the fallout of the "welfare queen", "crack baby" and "ebonics" controversies. See also: Iraq war. https://twitter.com/s_m_i/status/1342144037541834755
If you're surprised that a certain NYT employee's childish behavior over the fallout of Caliphate, we are talking about an institution that has never meaningfully reconciled with the fact that it missed the Holocaust.
Women had to sue NYT in order to cover anything outside of basically the Styles section. This is an institution that doesn't reward self-reflection in any capacity and is almost pathologically unable to say that they are wrong. And it breeds this bias into its reporters.
It's corrections process is completely tilted towards objective wrongs - did you misspell someone's name - but that a story is *functionally* incorrect in terms of the narrative it stitches together almost never warrants a correction unless there's a really large public outcry.
Others like @rafiazakaria have meaningfully pointed out other broader structural issues with Caliphate and terror reporting more generally. But if Shehroze Chaudhry hadn't been revealed to be a liar people wouldn't be really looking at them. https://thebaffler.com/alienated/stalking-the-story
