Y’all know I like to randomly share my thoughts. I’m glad more folks are discussing microaggressions. A few yrs ago when I taught a graduate level multicultural class, I explained microaggressions even further.
So, I broke it down: microassault, microinsult, and microinvalidation.
Microassault is basically the more purposeful and explicit racism. (Like when someone referred to me as “the colored therapist)
Microinsult is when something is rude and insensitive...sometimes cloaked in a supposed compliment. (Like when people have told me I “speak well!”
Microinvalidation invalidates someone’s experience (Like when a colleague told me that it wasn’t true that some of my white clients were not actually reacting negatively to my Blackness or when people say there is no racism in the world now)
Of course we don’t necessarily need to break it all down, because a microaggression is a microaggression. Have you experienced these?
