Let's talk about this fall damage https://twitter.com/kei_SMS/status/1342017011900006400
Normally Mario can only take fall damage when landing more than 1500 units below the last place he was in a grounded state, and with -70 vertical speed or lower. The vertical speed is no problem, but he landed on the same flat ground he jumped off of, so why the fall damage?
Well, Mario isn't actually in a grounded state while holding the chain. It's usually not a problem because letting go of the chain leaves you on the ground, but spinjumping out bypasses that.
But where does the fall height come from? You can see Mario on the ground before he grabs the chain, and that's even below the point where he lands at the end!
Well, as it turns out, the leash is hovering 3 units above ground the whole time. So when it moves Mario towards it, Mario's moving slightly up, and that movement is done in a way that also updates his last grounded height.
Soon Mario snaps to the ground but the last grounded height doesn't change this time; instead it keeps rising by 3 units per QF (give or take the height Mario actually goes up or down along the way)
