How to Become a Better Writer — Even If You Just Started Out

Think a ton, write a lot, and publish little.

Writing online is wonderful. It helps to conceptualize your thoughts, helps to attract like-minded people and finally, it can make you money.

Do I need to say more?

It might feel a bit like a frenzy these days — everybody is writing or aspires to be a writer one day. Why is it that we all want to write?

It’s one of the purest forms of expression and in times where physical contact and experience are scarce, the internet is our playground.
Besides the fact that writing online is fun to do and lucrative, it comes with so many other benefits:

1. Writing helps you become a better thinker
2. A quick feedback loop
3. Writing forces you to curate heaps of data and be concise
4. You become a valuable asset to others
"Anyone can be a writer, including you, with the right process to support your goal" — @Tim_Denning
The 3 pillars of writing.

Great writing comes after 1 thing: writing.

A runner runs, a painter paints, so a writer writes. To become a great writer, you just have to start writing.

It all comes down to the following cycle:
1. Think a ton
2. Write a lot
3. Publish little
Move from good to great.

👇

1/ Write 2 rubbish pages a day
You certainly have ideas. As long as you don’t put your words on paper — you don’t know if they’re great or shit.
Make it a game. Try to write as much as possible. Put your fingers on the keyboard.
2/ Ask for feedback

Do you mean that I should share my non-perfect work with others so they can judge it and perhaps share their feedback with me?

Yes, that’s exactly what I mean.

Writing online can feel lonely at times.

Look for ways to collaborate and engage with others.
3/ Hit publish and glean insights

Scary? Perhaps. Required? Definitely.

Hit it and close your laptop. Open it up later on and check the results. When the dust has settled, what’s the score?

And finally, did you die? No, you’re alright.

You see — publishing wasn’t that hard.
A mistake we all make

In the process of becoming a better writer, you’ll face many obstacles. One of the biggest mistakes we make — I’m no exception to the rule — is comparing our work with the work of others.

Let me say it in a friendly manner — you should stop doing this.
How can I say this in a friendly way? You should stop doing this.
You can’t see the effort someone else put in, you can’t look in their head and you can’t experience their life. Expecting yourself to write the same stuff is not going to happen.
Forget about it.

You can do only do 1 thing — focus on your own output and work.

Now, get to work.
