My overwhelming reaction to the Brexit news is sadness at the whole sorry affair, particularly in how the EU was caricatured in British public life. The unseriousness and small-timeness of that

We never voted to leave the actual EU. We voted for Escape from Colditz

If we had taken the rational and honest decision to leave the actual EU I could have lived with it. But instead we staged a national pantomime, with the EU as the Wicked Stepmother

Seeing people prefer fantasies to realities, silly stories to complex facts - that will be my abiding memory of these times.

And one final thing: Please spare us now an enquiry into British national identity. We need to have a look at the rest of the world, and not our dumb, unfit for purpose cartoon of it, for a change
