In 2005 I was responsible for a checkpoint at the al Jumariyah bridge in Baghdad during a National Assembly meeting. There's a road under the east side of the bridge that we blocked to prevent any car bombs. We put concertina wire across the road and placed a tank as overwatch. https://twitter.com/peterwsinger/status/1342123238231584776
In the late morning I was called on the radio to come to the blocking point. When I get there I find a Blackwater SUV had run into my concertina wire. The truck was in bad shape - wire around the axles and all that. And a bunch of livid mercs.
They demanded to be let through. I said no. More angry, they declared their right as Americans.
I reminded them they weren't officials. They started suggesting they would go through anyway. I pointed at my tank. They went away, dragging their broken SUV with them.

Back at the FOB later that day, the squadron S3 summons me to his office.
"Heard you totalled a Blackwater truck."
Yes sir.
"Good. Fuck em."

All over Iraq these cowboys thought they could do whatever they wanted. The costs of that were borne by Iraqis. They didn't care about the mission because it was only ever about pay and profit. They should never be forgiven for it.
