Dick Cooper peacefully passed away yesterday. At 86 he was still going strong, even participating in our Zoom workshops deep into the Fall term. An incredibly multifaceted individual with a remarkable career in academia and government. Thank you for everything you taught us. RIP.
For those unfamiliar with Dick, prior to teaching at Harvard for almost 40 years, he had taught and actually served as Provost at Yale. Before then, he was a Marshall Scholar at LSE in the 1950s, where he was a student of J. Meade. His Ph.D. advisor at Harvard was G. Haberler.
In government, he was an economist at the Council of Economic Advisers (under JFK), Under-Secretary of State for Econ. Affairs under Carter, and Chairman of the National Intelligence Council under Clinton, in addition to serving as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.
