yesterday i learned a neat etymology.

look at the word CRIMSON, especially the first 4 consonants.

this word is related to #Turkish kırmızı "red", & itself goes back (through French & Spanish) to #Arabic قرمزي qirmiziyy, which denotes the same color.

...
the Arabic قرمزي qirmiziyy is a nisba adjective in -iyy & points to the noun قرمز qirmiz.

qirmiz was itself loaned into English (as "kermes") & refers to an insect in the genus Kermes that are mushed up to produce red dye. 🐞🔴🔴🔴
the Arabic word for the bug was itself borrowed from an older #Persian word that would have looked something like *kermest, wh goes back to Proto-Indo-Iranian *kŕ̥miš "worm"! 🪱

(modern Persian has قرمز qermez, but this was borrowed back from Arabic)
