Constantly amazed by the neo-Pelegian denial of original sin that is rampant in modern Orthodoxy. One cannot read St Paul without realizing that mankind stands condemned and dead in soul as children of wrath before a holy God- without doing mental gymnastics at least.
St Gregory Palamas (14th century) writes that all humans share an ancestral curse and condemnation
The Confession of Dositheus (17th century) says that unbaptized infants are liable to eternal punishment due to original sin
St Ignatius Brianchininov (19th century) writes that unborn children are participants in the sins of their forefather
St Symeon the New Theologian (11th century) says that human nature is sinful and participatory in Adam’s sin from its very conception
These are just a few random examples of the Church’s perpetual teaching. I challenge anyone doubtful to find one- just one- saint, father, or council before the 20th century who performed the same mental gymnastics that modern day theologians and online “apologists” do about OS
The reason that this issue is so important: if we are dead wrong about what Christ has saved us from, how then can we really be assured of our salvation?
