In August 1907 the #Manchester Evening News reported the retirement of John Sharp, for 31 years the Superintendent for the #Lancashire & #Yorkshire Railway Police.

Let’s look briefly at his achievements...

Prior to joining the L&Y Railway Police he had been engaged in similar work with the #Cheshire Lines Railway in #Liverpool and the Great Northern Railway in #London.
He was described as “an energetic worker” and having done “excellent work in the railway world.”

Supt Sharp was the chairman of a committee appointed to draw up a book of instructions for the guidance of railway police, which was issued in 1900.
“In recognition of his excellent service in this important matter a presentation was made by his brother superintendents...

...of a fine photograph of himself. Naturally he is very proud of this pleasant memento.”

He was succeeded as Superintendent by his son, Mr F R Sharp, who for some time has held the rank of Inspector under his father.
