"ECT"
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT),🤔🤔, I could still remembered when our lecturer mentioned the words during the management of psychosis, a mental health disorder.

We were all curious to know how it work and how it looks because we all could already pin-point what it's..
by merging the three words together.

In lay-man terms; "it's a kind of treatment which entails passing a controlled electrical current carefully in a patient to induce seizure".

So, after the lecture, we moved down to our teaching hospital,
which is Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, when i was a student at Bayero University Kano @BUK_Campus . We were taken to the ECT room and shown the ECT machine, how it works and the types or forms.

We have the modified and unmodified ECT.
The modified ECT is given after the patients has been anesthetized and muscles relaxed, for this the patient won't be aware of it.

But the unmodified ECT , the patient is fully conscious when the electric current is passed through.
😨😨
That's so terrifying to us. It's like touching a naked electric wire with your hands. Try to imagine

We kept asking the lecturer questions on this.

Well, we were not opportune to witnessed it being done on a patient before we graduated and left.
On Tuesday, 22-12-2020 , i witnessed it 😨 and it was the unmodified. It was done on the patient and she became conscious🙏🏾🙌🏽😊 within one hour from the start of the procedure.

Tho, i was close to tears😭 staring down on her, the induce grand-mal seizure etc.
"Nurses Empathise more than they Sympathise"
😊😊😊😊

But then, ECT is very effective in managing some mental health disorder like severe depression etc.

I witnessed it live at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika, Zaria, Kaduna State. @ABU_Campus
Where i am currently running my internship program.

My patient who had ECT is Elated the next day i went.

She's doing great. She fed her baby, talking and smiling with people. Tolerated her feeds.

As i said, ECT is Very Effective.
