MILAN THIS SEASON: TACTICAL ANALYSIS OF OUR GAMES IN THE 2020/21 SEASON (A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL)

A VIDEO THREAD OF MILAN’S VARIOUS PRINCIPLE’S IN DEFENCE AND ATTACK

Pioli in an interview to the athletic spoke about how he wanted to emulate Flick’s Bayern. Armed with an enhanced Technica team over the course of 12 months Pioli has revamped Milan into a team with a tactical identity.
“I am also not someone who says: ‘Pass it there, now over there.’ I don’t like tactical systems. What I do is suggest certain principles of football, but on the field it’s the players who must be able to ‘read’ the situations and move as a consequence.”
Pioli has designed a system, unlike Conte (no pun intended), which gives players a lot of freedom and is not automatized and practiced movements. Players are explained cetain concepts of how to play and then they take ownership of it on the field.
DEFENSIVE TACTICS
The most important aspect of Milan’s style of play is their defending. Milan engage in pressing. Pressing is closing down space or passing lanes of the player in spaces. Milan do an innovative way of pressing called Horizontal pressing
If the opposition pass the half line into the Milan half then Milan form a narrow block and try to push the opposition wide and press them like this
BUILD-UP PLAY

When Milan play out from the back, if teams are pressing Milan’s defenders aka Kjaer and Alessio then Milan bring Calabria into play, push the opposition back and then bring the CB’s into play.
If the team is not pressing high and crowding the center one of the double pivot falls back into the backline, pushes the full backs and creates space for Alessio or Kjaer to pass.
CREATING CHANCES

Milan use a lot of inward out-movements from their wide players to create space. As explained before Milan do not have a patter hence they are very difficult to stop.
Milan use overlapping full backs by having the wide players move infield and the full backs make an overlapping run inside the box or cross
If the wide player is pushed wide then the full back underlaps
Transitions are, if practiced well, impossible to stop. Milan are deadly on the counter and with quick players with good ball control, they are difficult to stop
A more newly developed tactic to beat teams who defend deep is to make long balls to Rebic who makes run behind defenders. This helps to bypass the lines of press and be more direct
Earlier in the season when we had Ibrahimovic and our players were more fit and Athletic, Milan use a lot of one touch passing combinations to open up defences. When you move the ball as quickly as Milan, it is impossible to stop them as again there are no set patterns here
And then we use quick switches of play. Milan suck opponents to one side of the and then use one of the double pivots (now even they are not needed) to quickly switch play to the other wing and it opens up the defence
TACTICALLY MILAN ARE ONE OF THE BEST TEAMS IN EUROPE RIGHT NOW AND THE BEST WATCH. PIOLI HAD A LOT OF CRITICS AND DOUBTERS BUT HE HAS SILENCED THEM.
