It’s been interesting reading on the GLP’s attempted intervention in the Bell case. Some points.
1. The funding website is simple prejudice. This is a legal case. It’s inappropriate for lawyers to raise money by claiming conspiracy. Difficult to see objectivity here.

2. There is clearly competing evidence about whether denying treatment increases suicide risk. To me the studies don’t prove causation. I don’t think they separate out PBs from anything else, or treatment from pre-existing difficulties. But they don’t eliminate causation either.
3. Equally there seems little doubt that the discussions over status carry their own consequences in terms of people’s mental health.
4. It therefore seems tolerably clear that more work is urgently required.

5. It would, obviously, help if people didn’t insist on conclusions based on the bits of evidence backing their own positions. However, this being social media, I’d rather put money on a random horse running tomorrow (yes, I know there’s no racing on Xmas Day) than that happening
6. I see no merit in legal action by non-parties based on a partial approach. The Good Law Project’s crowdfunded money would be better used to fund research or expert assessment of all existing evidence in an attempt to work out what is really going on. That’s genuinely important
7. Equally, commentators saying things such as “all parents of trans kids are evil” (I paraphrase) or denying genuine issues should ask whether this is how they want to address real people with real concerns. This seems to me akin to antisemitism denial - good people just don’t.
8. Meanwhile I want to ask @GoodLawProject whether I am an astroturf conspirator? If not what am I? A sheep? A dupe? This language is also unhelpful. It, again, is akin to those who deny antisemitism and say all Jews are tools (unwitting or otherwise) of an evil conspiracy. Stop.
9. My Twitter TL is full of people I respect disagreeing. That’s fine. It’s how complex issues get worked out.
10. It’s largely respectful & decent. But abuse isn’t ok, & saying someone is lying is abuse. Please don’t. People who are suffering may be reading. Think of them.
