When I bring up the words “Indigenous person” who is the person who comes to mind? What do they look like? If they are non-Black, can you tell me why? #DoctoraNature
We have maintained the myths & legends created by settlers that Indigenous peoples only look a certain way...while ignoring the fact that enslaved folks from Africa got ripped of their Indigeneity through slavery that stole them from their native lands to work stolen lands.
This is not my lived experience but again and again when my Black-Native partner’s Indigeneity is brought to any discussion (even with former friends), they ask so many questions while failing to interrogate white coded & passing Indigenous folks.
In order for us to build solidarity, we must move forward by choosing to unlearn everything we have been taught about Indigenous peoples. Go back to why a certain type of person comes to mind when I mention the words “Indigenous peoples”
