@LimitingThe I want to add something about the Apple Car and Toshiba LTO leak from Gali. Foxcon produces iPhones etc for Apple, Foxcon also announced a BEV platform that will get into production by 2024 using big castings comparable to Tesla. /1
If I assume single cel leak from Reuters points to a single battery pack, with cells only in series, or a sandwich manner to get series connections within a single cell, they should save a lot of packaging material, and potentially have a more efficient packaging than Tesla /2
If they buy Lucid, I think it will be to get the IP. Probably they will handle it the same way as Beast Audio: have it as an extra brand but use the IP for their own products. /3
LTO battery is around 1/3rd the energy density as lithium ion batteries. Combining the efficiency of lucid IP and the Foxcon BEV platform, I think it could be reasonable to assume the Apple car range would be about 1/3rd of comparable Tesla. This could get close to 200 miles.../4
If it hits that number, with around 5 minute recharge time and a long lasting battery, this could be a very risky shot for Apple. Cost will be high, but Apple branding always manages to sustain a higher price than competitors /5
I think it will put fire under premium and luxury car brands, certainly if Apple manages to get decent autonomous driving working. This would compete with for example bmw iX with semiautonomous tech, and big chance legacy auto won’t be able to compete and get profits /6
And with legacy auto having troubles to even compete with Tesla in profitable BEV mainstream models, this would add to the big car business disruption happening by 2025... /7
