There’s this myth that science fiction fans like to tell themselves about how they’re somehow more advanced or imaginative, wanting to explore new worlds and possibilities. But like with anything it is what you bring to it. Most sci-fi today is the most chaste, puritanical shit.
Compared to what, say, “Aeon Flux” was doing back in 1991, both narratively and in its comfort with outré sexuality, most sci-fi television of the last decade looks like Christian after-school specials.
All of “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” is like two minutes of sad fucking through a hole in a sheet with the lights out, trying not to make too much noise so you don’t wake up your mom. Sick, neutered fantasies that we pretend are for children to excuse the fact they’re castrated.
It’s not that that stuff is all bad, but there’s hardly anything that can think beyond it anymore, at least in film and television. The weird corners are all getting scrubbed away right now and what we’re left with is a sexless corporate sheen.
