#NowWatching: BATMAN RETURNS (1992) with Michael Keaton, directed by Tim Burton

Christmasy and — with increasing ease — the best live-action Batman movie ever made.
This movie immediately answers the question, what would Pee-wee and Simone’s baby have looked like if they hooked up during his big adventure.
By making Donald Tr-er, Max Shreck the true villain in this movie, Penguin and Catwoman are allowed to be dark anti-heroes, which makes their conflicts with Batman much more gray and interesting...which in turn makes Batman a more interesting character.
The Penguin is as Tim Burton a character as you will ever find.
This movie is an urban horror film, a sex thriller, a black comedy, a political and gender satire, and a deconstructionist comic book movie before it’s a superhero summer blockbuster.

We were not ready to understand it in 1992.
Of the four 90’s Batman movies, this one is the most successful in achieving its goals and staying true to its tone.

You’re not going want to hear it, but this is the second-best of those moves on those bases...
Just a reminder, Michelle Pfeiffer was a bonafide movie star who did this scene in a kids superhero movie.
It’s very important the first thing we see Catwoman do in this movie is beat the shit out of a would-be rapist.
We don’t talk enough about Andrew Bryniarski’s PERFECT Walken impression as Chip Shreck. #dadgosaveyourself #dadgo
Speaking of Walken, he is...incredibly good in this thing.
“I mistook me for someone else.” — Bruce Wayne to Selina Kyle, describing Batman essentially
Aw...Jan Hooks. 😢❤️
The idea Penguin is basically a rotten egg with legs and becomes a populist sensation is about as 2016 to 2020 as a 1992 movie can get.
No one talks about it but Michael Murphy plays the feckless Mayor Jenkins (named in the novelization) as the perfect ineffectual haircut and empty suit.
The Ice Princess is played by Cristi Conaway, which is something we were doing a lot of on the early 90’s, for whatever reason.
If there’s one thing about BATMAN RETURNS I don’t like it’s the diminished role for Pat Hingle’s Commissioner Gordon, one of my favorite characters in the other three 90’s Batmovies.
2020, amiright?
I’ll tell you, The Ice Princess falling to her death on the box that lights the Christmas tree that releases bats into Gotham Plaza to frame Batman for her murder is about as dark as these movies get.
1992 Penguin loses public support and Max Shreck’s backing when he’s caught on tape insulting the citizenry.

2016 Penguin would have been elected president and then done whatever he wanted with impunity for four years.
We’ve reached the Maxquerade party, so this gif is mandatory.
Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle as costumes at the ball is a bit heavy-handed...but also kind of perfect.
And now we’ve reached the fuck it, just flood the movie with rocket-firing penguins part of the movie. And why not?
