REVIEW YEARLY GOALS 🎯 - I maintain my yearly goals, review it every quarter and at the end of the year. I also update my short term goals (2/3 years) and long term goals (5-10 years). This helps me keep track of how I am progressing in my life against my goals. (2/n)
REVIEW EXPENSES 💸 - I use mint to track my expenses. At the end of year, I see how my spending trend is looking, find my top spending categories and then accordingly adjust my budget for next year to make sure I don't spend on non-essential things. (3/n)
REVIEW NET WORTH 📈 - I use a google sheet to track my assets and liabilities. This is really critical to make sure your liabilities are not stacking up. My wife and I only update this at the end of the year to keep a tab of how our assets are growing. (4/n)
REVIEW INVESTMENTS - I go to all my brokerage accounts like 401k, taxable and IRA accounts to see if my asset allocation is accurate or if I need to adjust my investing pattern to maintain some asset allocation. This also helps me review where I am invested in holistically. (5/n)
TAX LOSS HARVESTING 📉- I also take this opportunity to see if I have any investments that are in losses and try to do tax loss harvesting if there is an opportunity. This helps me reduce my taxable income which helps reducing my taxes. (6/n)
UPDATE RETIREMENT CONTRIBUTIONS 🏖 - IRS changes contributions limits to retirement accounts like 401k, IRA, Roth IRA every few years. Review it and update your recurring contributions percentage for next year accordingly. (7/n)
REVIEW BENEFICIARIES 👥 - Check who is beneficiary on your financial accounts and make sure beneficiary listed is correct. (8/n)
CREATE CHECKLIST FOR TAX DOCS - This is also the time to prepare for filing taxes during tax season next year. I create a list of documents I need before filing taxes next year. (9/n)
DONATIONS 🙏 - I have a goal of donating 2% of my pre-tax income every year. I review how much donations I have made over the year and then donate the remaining account required to meet my yearly goal. (10/n)
REFLECT 🧠 - Take sometime and reflect on how the year went, the good parts, the bad parts and what you want to change in your lifestyle to achieve what you want to get out of life in the future. This should also feed into your goals. (11/n)
