I have a little story of hope for this holiday season ✨🎄 🧵

Grab your hot chocolate, sit comfortably and come along!
I announced plans to create a waste series a couple of months ago.

(still working on it. embarrassing. I know. but this story will explain why.) https://twitter.com/isaboemeke/status/1305200659126538242
I worked with a couple of people on making the necessary calculations. All my assumptions were confirmed, life was good.

But then... THIS happened.

The prospect of putting✨ bad explanations ✨ out into the world horrified me.

I’m obviously biased pro-nuclear. Any data that supports my beliefs is the data i’ll gravitate towards.

But that’s the opposite of being pro-reason and pro-science.
So, I decided to ask @simonahac to criticize my calculations.
He agreed to it and after a lot of back and forth we decided to add more people and turn this into a bigger project.

Me @simonahac and @energybants jumped on a zoom call. It was supposed to last one hour and be about assumptions. It lasted three and we talked about *everything*.
That initial call started a little tense, with everyone slightly unsure of the others’ intentions.

But, slowly it became obvious we all had the same goal: decarbonization

We just disagree on how to get there.
“The call” has evolved into a weekly meeting that we all look forward to.

And it’s growing! A fourth person is joining in this week.

We each take about 3 hours of our weekend to talk about climate change, energy and even Egyptian pyramids (*cough cough* Mark)
But why am I telling you this?

- To explain why the waste series isn’t ready 😬

- To highlight the importance of challenging our pre-existing beliefs
- To share my learnings. Through this collaboration, I learned that it’s important to try to understand and work with those on “the other” side.
The future of our species depends on our ability to solve increasingly complex problems. The only way to do so, is through large scale collaboration. That’s only possible if we are willing to talk to and work with a large number of people, including those who we disagree with. 🎄
